Business Case and Capital Asset Management:

Strategic Planning starts with a strategic business case. Successive stages of the business process, whether for 'project', 'process', 'component' or 'R & M' levels, often require applicable business cases, whether to support an already decided option, or to analyze a series of options so as to allow the choice of the best option.

A general definition of business case is 'the application of a process of business reasoning, consistently, to a series of alternatives, to allow for the presentation of a clearly supportable and optimal solution'.

Capital Asset Management refers to the standards and processes applied through an asset’s full life cycle, from planning and development or acquisition, through to operation, maintenance, renovation and renewal, demolition, sale or disposal.

Both the public and private sectors utilize business case methodology and capital management practices, in different ways. The private sector builds from a financial base consideration, and adds ethical, environmental, and social impacts where applicable. Public sector work requires consideration of a complete range of evaluation criteria and alternatives, including P3's, and must be respectful of the May 2002 Capital Asset Management Framework for the Province.

I have extensive experience in the preparation, review, and training aspects of both business case methodology and capital asset practices. At this stage of my life, I enjoy a facilitative role in guiding groups working in either of these areas, assisting in clarifying the various process steps, in order to arrive at the optimal and most collaboratively satisfying solution.

I welcome the opportunity to assist you in that facilitator role.
